It is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, specifically native to the USA state of Maine, where it is the official State Cat.
Tortoiseshell describes a tri-color coat coloring (often also called Calico) found almost exclusively in female cats. Cats of this coloration are believed to bring good luck in the folklore of many cultures. In the United States, these are sometimes referred to as money cats.
